Ethical issues related to running this list

Hey folks,

Being the owners/moderators of this list puts Richard and myself in a
particularly sensitive position regarding being careful to not use this
list to promote our and our clients interests in a manner that would not be
available to other list members. We make every effort to hold any postings
we might make to the same criteria we would hold postings from other list
members.

If a thread is ongoing about a specific topic and we can use our
experiences or our client's experiences to provide a useful reply, we will
generally not hesitate to do so. If and only if it helps enhance the
information provided, we may mention the client by name and URL. Others
are welcome to take a similar approach.

We now have a situation where a client of ours has a product that helps
people advertise and promote their web sites. Given the nature of the
product and their modest budget for advertising, we are hard pressed to
come up with a better recommendation for this client to generate awareness
than to sponsor this list. While I don't want to exploit our position as
operators of this list, I also strongly feel that one of our clients should
not be denied the same opportunity to promote their product to their target
audience that everyone else has just because their web developer/online pr
firm happens to be us.

So our compromise on this subject is this -- when one of our clients
becomes a sponsor of this list, we will post a note at the beginning of
their sponsorship week indicating that they are a client of ours. This
way, everyone will be aware of relationship and any potential conflicts of
interest in advance. We welcome feedback should anyone feel this is not a
reasonable way to handle this situation.

So barring an influx of negative feedback, starting tomorrow Lynx Marketing
(our client) will be a sponsor of this list for one week. I have mentioned
them previously on this list (though not by name) in regard to an ongoing
thread about mousepads and watches with URLs on them.

Best,
