Web ad banner rates?

Hi all,
I know this is probably a wide-open question, but any help would be
appreciated....
I'm trying to decide what reasonable rates are for web page banner ads (like
460x60), to be placed on the pages of my new web site. I want to charge per
impression, not monthly, etc, because the web site isn't operational yet and
I have no idea whether traffic will be 1000 visitors/month, 10,000, or
100,000, or ?????.
>From what little research I've done so far, it looks like they can go
anywhere from $5 per 1000 impressions up to as much as $250/1000, with more
'typical' being around $20-$30.
Actually I'm going to try the monthly 'ad auction' idea that I believe was
mentioned by someone in this mailing list (thanks for the idea, whoever it
was -- E-mail me -- I'd love to talk to you about it!). So I'm not so much
looking for a rate to "set", I'm trying to put together some wording for the
bidding guidelines, and a minimim bid amount that would at least help pay for
my time to set up the ad.
What I have so far is basically a $2/1000 minimum bid, and requiring a
deposit in the amount of 2500 impressions, based on a very wild guess that
each spot will get about 5000 impressions the first month. I'm also allowing
them to set a maximum dollar amount, so they can bid without fear of going
over budget. My site will have over 150 pages with varying degrees of
traffic (the site is tree structured), and I'm offering both top and bottom
spots on each page (you may have seen my earlier question about this.) So it
will take a lot of advertisers (or a few that want to blanket the site? :-)
) to fill it up.
Since I'm new at this, I would appreciate anyone telling me if this is way
off, either too high (hope not!) or way too low to be taken seriously.
I don't mind 'giving away' the spots for what could amount to a $5 initial
investment for the advertiser ($2/1000, 2500 deposit) if that's what it takes
to get advertisers to sign up initially. I just don't want to scare people
away by being so far out of 'normal' either way that they don't bother
bidding.
Help!
Thanks in advance,
Stan Spielbusch
