Announcing a web site

Steve Siegel writes:
This October, my association is going to announce to its members at its
annual national convention, the launching of its new web sight. There has
been no marketing or promotion of any sort to date. I have just been put in
charge of formulating the plans for its announcement at the convention.

My take is, curiousity dies the minute they hear about the NEXT interesting
or useful site. Give the members lots of info, and make it hard for them
to miss the site's introduction.
1. Make sure there are PCs available for people to check it out, even if
it's a copy running right off a drive. Use a projection unit to show it to
groups.
2. Most conventioneers can't see it till they get home? Then announce that
you're taking pictures and posting them to a special convention section on
the site.
3. Print up and distribute mouse pads with a site graphic and URL.
4. Take biz cards with e-mail addresses, and send them a reminder to visit
later.
5. Print up posters of the home page, with the URL in BIG letters on the
bottom, and put them on every possible vertical space. Hand out left-over
posters.
6. Throw a party. Treat the web introduction like any other major
announcement. (am I being too obvious?)
A simple handout is worse than nothing, since it will just get lost in the
mound of convention handouts. Good luck trying to rise above the noise!
