Not so long ago, we used to look around on the net, using wais, ftp, usenet,
and anything else available, to find the software we needed to run our web
sites. Only in the last 6-12 months has it become common for someone to
look to a commercial product first, when they had a need for something on
the web. I built my entire site using FREE software, or software that was
written for me in trade for something I could provide. I'm not a
programmer, but I've traded with programmers for graphics design, for page
coding, or anyting else they needed that I could do. It's the same as my
internet software. Almost none of it is commercial products, it's almost all
freeware, except for photoshop and eudora, which I paid for only because I
couldn't find anything comparable for free.

There are alot of things you can use, depending on your needs, traffic
loads, how much tracking you want, and how much time you are willing to
spend on it.

One simple solution is a script called random image. It's available at
Matt's Script archive, and will choose from a list of images each time the
cgi is called. An example of it in action can be seen at my web site, it's
the bookmark image at the top of the home page. http://www.cymedia.com

This script can write a simple log file of each display of the image, so you
can track each image. It's not going to port it into an SQL database so you
can type "banner1, price, customer" and get a detailed report, but it works.
There are other options out there too. Don't spend money on it until you
know it's not available for free out there.

The way the internet used to be..... is that really nostalgia? It's only 25
years old!
