Bruce, here's the latest report from Mike Walsh. I think there's a list
of Fortune somethings on the web somewhere but memory fails. Cyber Atlas
at http://www.cyberatlas.com/ has a pretty extensive set of data.
Here's the most recent InterNIC domain stats.
As of 08/02/96, the total count for domains registered with
InterNIC stood at 490,759. The table below gives the growth
over the last month.
.COM .ORG .NET .EDU Total
07/05/96 397,690 27,358 16,027 2,643 443,718
Net Change 21,670 1,481 1,088 43 24,282
07/19/96 419,360 28,839 17,115 2,686 468,000
Net Change 21,300 859 562 38 22,759
08/02/96 440,660 29,698 17,677 2,724 490,759
Although the increases appear to be holding constant at about
45,000 to 50,000 per month, domain name grabbing has become
rampant. For example, one Canadian company has registered over
9,000 names in the last two months. Their modus operandi is to
register all common (and frankly, not so common) family names and
then "lease" them back to people who want vanity email addresses.
I suspect they'll balk when InterNIC sends them the bill for
close to $1 million.
