While this may be true for many products and services, it's patently
untrue for others. Can you imagine buying clothing based on
description alone? I can't. And I wouldn't buy anything that had
an aesthetic component without being able to look at it.
Direct marketing is a very effective model for many sales efforts.
It's not the only model, nor is it even the most appropriate in a
given situation. Finally, while the long-term goal of most
advertising is to make the sale, the short-term goals can be very
different - brand identity, corporate presence, community relations,
for example.
