Aloha Thom and all,
First of all I am not a professional.I do however have a successful
webpage that generates enough sales for me that I have to farm out business
to my competitors.

Finally someone has put the marketing equasion in simple terms and
has held back until the right moment to present it.Content is in fact king
and timing is of the essence. You can't sell hula hoops very well right now
but you could in the 50's.Seems to me that like most things keeping it
simple works well.Too many bells and whistles are a turn off in general I
believe. If you have a timely product or service and present it well with
attention to the copy ,embellishing it with pleasing, tastefull graphics it
will sell for you.The bottom line though is having the real deal to
sell. You have to have a quality product or service that is fairly
/competitively priced to be truely successful because eventually word of
mouth takes over and continues to sell your product or service after the
initial sales get started.
Copy should hook the reader in and make them want your
product/service.Graphics give the page a professional feel. The hard thing
to instill over the web is trust.Whenever possible I believe putting a
picture of a human (seller preferably)on the page gives a warmth to the
page and gives the buyer a face to relate to when considering the
purchase.I believe you cannot have subliminal advertising but you can
create "hooks" that stick in a persons mind long after he/she has viewed
the ad.Just like in music.Think of your ad as a song with the copy being
the words and the graphics being the music.Image and content combined
create a "hook" to remember after the initial viewing.Appeal to the
population segment you're after in your words and graphics with
colors, sounds, movement and whatever embellishments to the words you feel is
necessary and don't over do it.
It has worked very well for me.
