Coupons effectiveness and implementation

We would like to hear from anybody that has experience with using coupons on
the WWW. The main questions we would like to see answered are:

1) How effective is it?

2) Is a 'simple' GIF coupon enough, or should there be some type of unique
code be put on each coupon?

3) Are there any special 'coupon scripts' to put such a code on a coupon?

4) Where can we find more info about this? A search on several search
engines revealed nothing that was of real use, and therefore we decided to
contact this group.
