Access to the Web can be just as important as monitoring its potential
misuse. Placing a computer in a public location, such as by the copier,
will control usage, but control will come at the cost of efficiency. Many
offices I have visited spend more time trying to control Internet access
than they do controlling cigarette and coffee breaks. In a way, the
Internet is evolving into the modern day coffee break. Why not allow your
employees to "goof off" for fifteen minutes a day?
Let's continue with the Internet/coffee break comparison. How would you
monitor an employee's coffee breaks?
You could use time cards, but this would probably be bad for office morale.
Employees may regard this practice as "nitpicking". The alternative as a
manager would be to address lengthy coffee breaks in the context of
performance at evaluation time. In the same light, an adequate review and
compensation system should be ample incentive to prevent employees from
misusing their privileged Internet access.
Give your employees a tool which they can use at their own discretion much
like the PC on their desks. If an employee wants to play Minesweeper all
day, they should know the consequences. However, fifteen minutes of
Minesweeper could be beneficial in alleving on-the-job-stress.
