Commercially supported email lists are developing.
In the near term, the model I have seen that works best is the double list
approach. There are two member lists, with almost identical content. One
has advertising on it, carefully screened advertising that is relevant to
the list topic, and the other has no advertising at all. Both lists send
out exactly the same user-supplied, editorial content. Each user decides
which of the two formats he/she wishes to receive. If the ad list is
objectionable to you, you get sent to the other list, AND you are invoiced
for an annual subscription fee. If you do not pay the fee, you can go
back to the free, ad-supported list.......or, if neither interests
you.......you are dumped from participation.
In the near future list management software will support microcharges
format which will allow one to pay as he/she goes, by the message, at
ultra low charges for each, say ten cents for 40 messages. This method
will allow list owners and list participants to earn money from lurking
list readers who do not contribute, all in proportion to the market
demand.
