Just in the process of doing the same for our biz. I agree that you're
doing the right thing by identifying topics. What I learned from talking to
a professional copywriter is that "how to's" are still widely accepted by
the pubs because they provide value to their readers. So whatever your
topic, the tone can be providing some easy steps.

Second, keep your artciles simple and focused on a single point. I know
when I get started a lot of time I want to tell it all. Again, the
copywriter friend advised to rather plan a series of articles that you
release, say once a month. That keeps the editor informed that you're going
to be a regular/constant source of articles that they might consider in the
future, even if they don't pick the first or second one.

Third, in selecting the pubs, the advise was to read for the style of the
specific pub and writer to suit it. I didn't do that, opting instead for a
more genral style that I'm hoping will stimulate a writer to call if it
doesn't fully fit their style.

I used the the SRDS to locate the appropriate pubs. Also, go to the trade
associations that apply to your target market and see what pubs they put out.

Finally, I understand that it is not as important to submit articles in the
old staid format that at least I learned about about 20 years ago. Use some
creativity in the style of the article. Writers and editors are people too.
They will be stimulated to read your piece in part by its packaging.

Hope some of this helps. Good luck.

Steve
