The original poster spoke of 'download time'. I don't find that to be a
problem - but I *do* find my personal email processing time to be
**significantly** more than under a second. I've posted on this recently
so I won't elaborate again, but briefly say that it takes time to
determine that an email is in fact junk - they don't all come with upper
case and INCREDIBLE in the first sentence. My inbox is currently up to
70, and if half of that is junk emails then it's going to cost me
several minutes to weed them out. That *does* offend me - as do the
other kinds of advertising you mention. The time taken up by TV
commercials (euphemestically called 'brief messages' or even 'this brief
message' [several commercials]) is extreme and most seem to be aimed at
idiots (here in the USA - where are you?); the news in newspapers is
lost in huge advertisments, my local classical station is unbearable
because of the 'in your face' commercials that are not at all in keeping
with classical music. And as for the billboards - well, I guess you must
be in the UK, where you can still see the beautiful countryside :*)
BTW I note that in the UK, the populace at large is generally called
'the public'; in the USA it is generally called 'consumers'. I once
asked my first advertiser why TV commercials here in the USA treat
people as if they were stupid. His response: 'because they are'. Let me
ask this list: why are so many commercials in the media so dumb?

Nope - newsprint is - it stopped me buying newspapers.
