If you have to ask ...

CHEAP EXPENSIVE

SPARC 2 or Pentium/133 SGI WebForce Indy
$ 2,000 - $ 2,500 $ 9,000

Cheap 56k router Same
$ 1,000 $ 3,500

56k connection setup T1 connection setup
$ 2,000 $ 3,000 - $ 10,000

Monthly Charges Monthly Charges
$ 350 - $ 700 $ 1,500 - $ 3,000

Cheap scales badly; if you get lots of hits, you're sunk because the
56k connection just won't handle it. Expensive will go a bit past T1.
The SGI system can be used to do full-out web page development,
including graphics.

The bottom line is that unless you really want to get into this
business, you probably don't want your own server. The only exception
is if you want to do your own CGI scripts and have full physical
control over your system.

For about $ 200 - 800/month, depending on exactly what's being
offered, you can get your own server and "park" it at a T1 to
T3-connected location. Server again would range around $ 2,500 or so,
depending on exactly what you needed to do with it.

You can get a virtual domain, which will make it appear to the public
like you have your own server at an ISP for around $ 30 - $ 100/month.
This would be the best solution for almost everyone.

When it's mission critical and you want your own people to have
full control over the system.

In my judgement, it would almost never pay for your own people to
run your server unless you're a massive company.

You can find out more about this in my WWW business FAQs:

Good luck!
