And if I'm not mistaken, your statement implies that web visitors keep
their eyes open 13% of the time (unless you meant 'page views' :*) No,
CyberAtlas wrote that the average ratio of hits-to-visits is 13%. That
is, as a rule of thumb, you may estimate average number of visits (not
page views) as 13% of the hits. According to
http://www.cyberatlas.com/advertising.html

"Ever-popular Playboy and Penthouse, report significantly lower
hits-to-visits ratios of 4-5% compared to other sites (average:
13%)".

This very useful and informative page also defines hits, visits, and
page views:

"Any requests made of a Web server --
including button clicks, graphics, etc. -- are recorded in a
Web site log
file as "hits." As a result, hits have no predictable relation
to the number of
users, visitors or Web pages viewed. A much better measurement
is the
number of visits, which I/PRO defines as "a sequence of hits
made by one
user at a site within a set period of time."

Another popular way to state Web exposure is page views. NPD
Research Group reports that each Web active individual visited
21.7
different domains on average in January. Each individual looked
at 3.7
different pages per domain and viewed each page 2.2 times. This
means
the average invididual had 177 page views (21.7 x 3.7 x 2.2) in
January. "
