Visits vs. hits

>Like everyone else, we're very interested in measuring web traffic and

>"iisstat.pl".

We use a program created by BBN Planet ( in Boston) called Web Advantage
which sounds very similiar to what you both have.

Our report gives us totals for the summary period including files
transmitted, Bytes transmitted, Average Files Transmitted Daily and
Average Bytes transmitted Daily. we also get daily transmission statistics
which help determine which days are busiest and hourly transmission
statistics which help determine which are our busiest hours, Total
trnasfers by client domain, Total transfers by reversed subdomain, Total
unique hits by each host, total unique hits per day and total transfers
from each archive section.

Although this may sound like a lot of info and it is ( trust me, I look at
it everyday!), ultimately it is hard to tell exactly HOW MANY viewers
there were to the site. That remains the challenge. I look at the number
of unique hosts for the time period and use that as a key indicator, if
you will. That is somewhat misleading because it is possible for more than
one viewer to be viewing your site from teh same host at the same time -
in other words, the number may be slightly downplaying your actual
numbers.

The trick is (from what I understand and I am fairly new to this) is to
get IP address and that technology is available for sites to track.

Since at some time most commericial sites have to justify their purpose
for being, we will use a more sophisticated measuring tool eventually.

I have heard that netgenesis has some good tools they are at
www.netgen.com You might try checking that out.
