To add to the debate about profitability on the web....

My partner told me this afternoon that Yahoo had posted a profit for the
last quarter (2nd quarter '96) and that they should be showing a profit
again this current quarter. Now, I don't know if the reasons for showing a
profit are some neat slight-of-hand technique or shell game like AOL
allegedly uses. My partner was a stock broker up until June 1st. He quit
his job at Dean Witter to pursue our plans with our web site (and after
relaying this discussion to him, he's wondering why he did). When he
explained the reasons why Yahoo lost money all last year and posted a profit
in the second quarter of this year, he used all of those wonderful stock
broker terms that seem to cause me to stare into space and think about
writing a huge check to buy some enormous number of shares in some obscure
corporation that might go belly up tomorrow (they have that hypnotic power
with those words they use)
