money-making web sites

Hello again everyone.

I have been blasted with replies to my original message ("A money-making web
site", Online advertising digest Volume 1, Issue 37, July 22, 1996). Many
people disagreed with me and cited lots of profitable sites. Unfortunantely,
they didn't understand what I meant. I didn't make my point clear enough.

I will try again.

I know of several profitable web sites that sell things directly to
consumers. (selling-direct).

I know of several web sites that converted their catalogs to HTML reducing
printing costs and increasing distribution. (online-brochures)

I know of several web sites that generate interest in their products which
encourages consumers to visit their stores (pre-selling).

Please, do not send me any more of these examples. They are not what I was
talking about.

I don't know of a web site that provides content on the web site (no external
product), that charges money (per access or per month), and is profitable.
(the so called 'pay site').

I don't know of a web site that provides content for free to people, that
charges for advertising space, and is profitable. (advertising)

If you know of a profitable web site with either of these two business
models, please e-mail me and/or the entire list.
