Normally a spectator and not a participant, I couldn=92t help responding to
Eric=92s request for the identity of profitable Web sites. Our company,
Beverly Hills Software has a Web site, The Windows NT Resource Center, at
http://www.bhs.com that is very profitable. We focus on a specific niche
market =96 Windows NT and BackOffice users =96 and provide valuable, free
services that keep them coming back. Even though we have temporarily
suspended several services because of a pending major reorganization and
expansion, the ones we currently offer still generate up to 17,000 page
requests per day.
Because we reach such a large number of our target audience, sponsors pay
premium rates for banner ads at our site. Ad revenues support our growth
from one to 12 employees in just ten months and allowed us to expand into
the Web development and mail list management businesses.=20
So is it possible for an Internet Web business to prosper based on ad
revenues? Yes. Could we have survived on user-based fees? I doubt it.
