NONE: Selling Banners
Selling Banners

[I actually raised this question as one of the very last messages to
get through before the Internet-Marketing mailing list was disbanded.
However, I'm afraid the demise of the list may have 'drowned out'
this question; I apologise to anyone who's seen or noticed it before].
I currently run an amazingly diversified web site, that has a grab-bag
of topics based on my personal interests. Predictably enough, it's
lots of fun to run, but it's not making me a penny.
I've heard a lot about sites that put up banners advertising other
sites and thus actually get some revenue. However, I'm clueless
as to where to start in trying to sell advertising on my site.
One approach, which struck me as very clever, was a centralized site
that auctioned off banner space. Unfortunately, when I checked it
out, it seemed like a bit of a flop; very few sites had bids, and
those that were bid for had a very low price. It looked to me like a
disappointingly small number of individual punters were were willing
to consider spending around $ 20 on an ad, but no more.
Someone I talked to, who has not yet released his full plans, had a
clever plan to sell ads for about a 30% commission. I thought that
was a little high, but he was talking about getting from $ 0.02
to $ 0.10 a hit. If I could get even the low end of that scale for
my pages, I might be able to make a living off them - and there could
be no sweeter idea for me.
Does anyone here have actual experience, tips and suggestions on
the subject of selling banners? I have put the URLs and descriptions
at the bottom of this message so anyone curious can check them out.
Any advice would be warmly appreciated!

Appendix: Possible sites worthy of advertising
Wonderful Women of the Web
This is a collection of interesting or creative pages produced by
women. It was created as a sort of reaction to 'Babes on the Web',
but unlike Babes, it has received nothing but positive comments
from those listed. The basic idea is that I surf the web to find
the best pages created by women; only those with substantial amounts
of interesting or entertaining original content get included.
Traffic is running at around 1,500 - 2,000 hits a day. Most of
them are probably for people looking for sexy sites. You might
say that this site gets the traffic of sexy sites without the
stigma of pornography. (I do have a 'sexy women' section for
those looking for it, but it's relatively small).

Internet Provider FAQ & Information
This is a collection of information for Internet providers, including
the 8,500 line Internet Provider FAQ, a highly respected resource.
About 200 hits a day, but a very high percentage of them would be
serious prospects for Internet-related equipment and services.

David's Personals
This is a creative personals page, containing personal ads. As yet
unestablished, the page still gets around 100 hits a day.
David's Amazing Internet Creations
The remaining pages are a really big grab-bag of stuff, which you can
access through my Electronic Mansion page:
http://www.amazing.com/david .
My entire site gets about 5,500 HTML file hits a day.
