>With so much of a site's success riding on easy "findability" in search
engines, and rather frequent changes in "most popular engine" and how the
different engines actually index sites, does anyone know of any blanket
techniques that help sites get higher priority in the key search engines?

I am now using a commented summary and meta keywords in the head and repeated
hidden text <ugh>. Any other ideas?

I looked into banner advertising on some of the search engines as well as on
some related sites, but for many of my clients (including some pretty darn
large ones) cost was prohibitive.

Terri, you might also try changing the titles of all pages that are to be
indexed by search engines. Changing their titles tells the engines that
there might be new content there, so they will reindex the info, resulting
in your site listed several times throughout a search engine's results.

If you really want to get smart, simply put a number before the title, such
as 1. Casbah's your musical aphrodisiac (http://casbah.dmn.com) or 2.
Casbah's Caravan. Some engines will display closely ranked results in
alphabetical order, and numbers usually come before letters in order of
preference. Sneaky, but effective!

I would agree that most engines are expensive to advertise with. If any of
your clients are music related or target the music consumer in some way,
have them get in touch with me. We've recently formed a new network of
popular music-oriented sites called DMN Media, where you can plan a
campaign targeting by domain name, user profile, browser type, etc... ,
over a broad, diverse group of sites, bound only by your client's budget.
Take a look at http://www.dmn.com/media for more info.

Hope this helps!
