In Switzerland newspapers have realized that not many people are surfing
the net yet, due to lack of understanding of what it is, how to access
it, lack of Mac/PCs. Therefore one of the major ones features a regular
PC-Tip (newspaper within the newspaper) every month discussing all Mac/PC
and Internet related issues including hard and software.
With their PC-Tip they suddenly reach all their readers, instead of just
those buying Mac/PC magazines. It is also featured online
http://www.pctip.ch
Furthermore they have set up their own sites both for the newspaper Tages
Anzeiger and the holding TA-Media.
They've even gone a step further and set up their own bbs using
FirstClass software. For a modest fee of SFr 40.-- p.a. every subscriber
to their newspaper (60.-- for none subscribers) gets unlimited access and
its own eMail (internet) address.
Even more they run regular special offers in their PC-Tip of
modem/internet bundles to attract more people. Feature free CD-Roms with
shareware etc.
That's what spreads the word to all people in our country and shows a
strong support for that new technology and eventually turn into some good
profit (advertising for them) both in the newspaper and online.
Otherwise our country is ages behind and most of our banks have poor
sites. None of them features online banking on the web.
Most people are still afraid of offering online transaction listening to
speaches about 'existing' security holes from people who themselves only
have little experience with the web.
Imagine that one of our major bank's marketing department has set rules
how their world wide sites have to be designed. They 'must' use Times
Roman fonts only on all pages. I really wonder how they should achieve
that....my web browser is set to use Geneva and Monaco fonts for all web
sites...
Appologize if my reply has become too detailed.
