I maintain several catalogs of resources relevant to web
developers and publishers. One of them is "The WDVL's Bookmarks" and one
of the categories is "Ads", i.e. pages about buying and selling online
advertising space. You can find several sources of rate information in
there. One of them - the IPA Advertising Index I think (I couldn't reach
it just now) - has a very comprehensive list of advertising sites
together with their traffic, rates, pricing methodology, etc. The
bookmarks list is at http://WWW.Stars.com/Bookmarks/Business.html#Ads
We ourselves charge between $5 - $30 per 1000 impressions, depending on
the ad style. We have just started offering 'small ads' which accounts
for the lower end of the scale, banner ads at the higher end.

I tried this for a while but did not find it to be very
satisfying. The audience targetting was not precise enough - many of the
ads appearing on my site had nothing to do with our subject matter.
You do not know how well produced the banners appearing on your site
will be, and how well they will fit with your specific page design.. and
if their server is slow or down, your user will wait or get a broken
image. I think it's a good idea in principle and if you have surplus ad
space this may be a very good use of it, subject to the above caveats.
