Andrew asked:
Is there any reliable way to tell if the person browsing your site is from a
particular city??? ie, can I display Austin ads to Austin people, and Boston
ads to Boston people???

You have heard some responses regarding domain name, but here is another
perspective on targeting. One way to target people in specific cities would
be to place ads on "community space" sites, such as City.Net or AOL's Digital
Cities. I haven't checked into pricing or ad model with them, but that would
be a way. Most Convention and Visitors Bureaus in "destination" related
cities also have sites, as do some Chambers of Commerce. Some are definitely
more sophisticated than others.

Another way to reach these folks would be to advertise what we like to call
"Geo-Intelligently." I don't mean to shamelessly promote our program, but
Mapquest is a very high volume destination site on which people view
interactive and customizable maps. We are working on a program that will
deliver targeted advertising based on the map that the user is viewing. This
will be effective both regional advertisers (i.e. "only show my ads to people
viewing a map of NYC." or "this four state region") as well as national
advertisers that have several major markets, but don't want to display to
smaller cities (or visa versa.) For example, "show my ads when people are
looking at NYC, Chicago, Atlanta, LA and SF."
Feel free to email me or post if you would like more info on this topic.>>>
