I don't think this is quite so. I don't think that hits from pages and/or
graphics that are served off of cgi scripts are hidden by AOL and other
sites that cache.

Additionally, If you put a guestbook or subscription form on your site, you
will know exactly how many people fill out the form, because the POST of
the form is not cached.

Looking at one of my sites for October, I had 1419 of my visitors subscribe
to my newsletter using the subscription form on the site, of which 145
(10.2%) came from aol.com hosts.

On this same site, I logged 3.5% of the hits (out of 391,708 total hits),
2.8% of the bytes transferred, 3.2% of the total pages viewed, and 3.4% of
the home pages viewed coming from aol.com hosts.

This tells me that about 2/3 of the real traffic on this site from aol.com
is being hidden by caching. (Assuming that aol.com visitors are just as
likely to subscribe to my mailing list as non-aol.com visitors.)

I know that AOL provides links to my site from their service, so I would
expect that the estimated 10% AOL traffic on my site is greater than what
most web sites would typically see.

Best,
