Hello Larry,

This is "SoCoOL" Bob ... publisher of SoCoOL ... Sonoma County
ONLINE and the "Now Famous" "Awesome Site Cowpie Awards."
I guess I couldn't help but respond to your EMail because, of
course, it gives me one more chance to see my name in print, and for
others to see it as well, but, also, because I "confess" I have found
the "function" of creating and operating an INTERNET Award to be
another one of those fascinating processes.
To answer your most specific question, yes, in MOST CASES, you
visit the Award Site and Nominate Yourself. I would have to estimate
that in at least 95% of cases, nominations for the Cowpie Awards are
sent by the Web Master's themselves ( You don't have to send in one
for The Cowpie ... I've already placed your site in Nomination ).
I believe this is natural, appropriate, and as it should be, and
personally, based on corresponding with literally 1,000's of these
Web Masters, it is, at the very least, a demonstration that the
SECOND STEP in Web Publishing is "promotion." Being listed on as
many search tools as possible ... seeking recognition from as many
people as possible.
At times, I "confess" again, that it appears that a great many
Web Publishers are also busy demonstrating our own "collective
technological growth." It becomes obvious that the person doing the Nominating
has never visited the site, doesn't know anything about it, and,
indeed, based on many of their responses .... don't care. ( Could be
un "rewarding" when this Web Publisher considers his most important
goal to try and help improve Human Relations )
The first page that Introduces The Cowpie gets 10 times as many
hits as any of the sites related to the Award. 10 times more than
Worthy of Consideration, 10 times more than Previous Cowpies, and 10
times more than The Award Itself. Indeed, I have often suspected
that The Cowpie is on a number of "forms" somewhere, which
automatically submit URL's, and maybe even the answers to the few
questions we ask when a site is nominated. ( Although I'm not
necessarily excited about it ... "The Doctor" .... who is our Number
One Volunteer Consultant ... and recipient of the current Cowpie
Award ... is busy ... among other things ... preparing just such a
"robot form." ) ( Incidentally ... a great many will love the Current
Awesome Site Cowpie Award Winner .... it teaches you to do The
Macarena ... with animations and midi sound !!!)
This phenomenon has helped cause me to become one of those voices
that encourages fellow Web Publishers to continually remember and
become more conscious of the notion that there are humans on the
other end of these electrons. The question for SoCoOL and others is
... can the INTERNET help improve not just the quantity of our
communications ... but the quality as well?
A part of this improved quality, I like to think, is the
nature of Giving An Award itself. I like to think of it as a way of
"showing appreciation" to the Web Master whom I almost always
believe, has demonstrated a lot of work, a lot of personal growth,
and a heart that is driven by the desire to communicate with and for
the benefit of others.
As such, I would encourage EVERYBODY to give an Award. It
doesn't have to be a Web Site ... it can be done in your personal
EMail ( We also give The Awesome EMail Award because we also publish
SoCoOL Visitors EMail ).
Just say Hey, I visited your Web Site, and I don't know how others feel,
but I think your site is AWESOME.
Then tell them WHY. Give a specific, STRENGTH BUILDING
COMMENT, that says I like this site because, and then tell them one
or two things, specifically, that you like about their site. ( I
particularly like ... about your site, for example ... that it
represents an effort to encourage positive behavior in Canadian Youth
... and ... that it apparently puts its money where it's URL is by
offering up to $15.000 to invest in their youthful creativity )
You might even want to close with the comment ... if others
would do more of what you are doing .... the INTERNET and the World
may indeed become a better place !!!
