A very good point! I recently did a site for a local non-profit that made
heavy use of GIFs for digital typography. The only real text on the home
page was the tag line at the bottom: "The Huntsville Land Trust. All photos
used by permission." Guess what appeared in all the search engines?

Is there any way around this, short of redesigning the home page? Do spiders
typically pick up comment lines?
