Whenever you provide text in graphical form, you should use ALT
tags so that people like me who surf with "auto-load images off"
can see what the page is about. Try surfing the web for a day
with images turned off (in Netscape: deselect "Auto Load Images"
under the "Options" menu, and then flush out your Netscape cache).
Most search engines do pick up the text in ALT tags. In addition,
use the META commands supported by some search engines to include
site descriptions in the file header.
Of course, EVERY graphical image should have an ALT tag (for example,
if you use graphic image-maps for your navigation buttons, the ALT
tag should say something like "Navigation Bar", and for regular
pictures, the ALT tag should describe the picture, such as "Photo
of Welch family homestead, circa 1821").
The use of ALT tags and META codes will not change the appearance
of the home page for users who have graphics enabled. However,
I would urge you to reconsider the use of GIF images to convey
text information, since it slows down loading of the page and
wastes internet bandwidth, which may eventually bring down the
'net, thus proving Bob Metcalfe right.
