The old marketing paradigm on the web was
1. register with the search engines
2. post in those newsgroups that allowed posts for business that were
relevant
3. participate in the newsgroups so you get noticed.

And now maybe run some banner ads

That paradigm was probably very reasonable for when the net was smaller and
the general user population was very computer literate. A Boolean search
was not something that caused their eyes to roll up in their heads. As
more and more people get on the net who are not that computer litearte, I
suspect that newsgroups,
and search engines will no longer be enough. Banner ads how effective are
they?
