I just read another message about software that blocks ad banners.

Could someone please tell me how these work? What do they look for that
marks a graphic as being an ad banner and not something else?

I'm thinking they might look at the html for lines that indicate a banner
rotation script, or something of that nature. But what about ads that don't
rotate? Or a site that rotates something other than ads?
