Agreed.

>From a practical point of view, there are two primary reasons that these
awards can be valuable: They bring you press (and credibility) or they
bring your site worthwhile traffic. It is also probably true that all else
being equal, the value of an award is directly proportional to how much the
award is promoted to the press/public, and inversely proportional to how
many awards are distributed.

I've never seen a web award that I would term a money making scam (although
undoubtedly these too shall come), but I have seen many that I would term a
traffic generating scam. When someone creates an award, and all they do to
promote it is e-mail out icons and ask the winners to put links on their
pages, it is often simply an excuse to take traffic from your web site to
theirs. Look for those that will bring your site more traffic than they
take away.

The best site I know of for this is Awards Central. They break up the
awards into: Best of Pages, Daily Cool Pages, Weekly Cool Pages, Specialty
Pages, Not so Great Pages. See: http://www.catalog.com/krs/special.html

Another good list is at: http://www.ern.com/best/award_list.htm
