We at the Newspaper Association of America do a weekly feature from
inside an online newspaper. It's called Feature of the Week, and it
appears to be frequented by many information consumers, not just industry
folk. It's under "Hotlinks" from our main site a www.naa.org, or you can
link directly via www.naa.org/hot/. While I'm at it, the hotlinks list is
a popular "for more news on the net..." link among non-newspaper sites,
as we are comprehensive for daily newspapers in North America with Web
presences, and list many other sites of value to the news professional.
Annually, we give out The Digital Edge awards or "Edgies" to online
newspapers we feel are pushing the envelope of the medium, and all of our
Feature of the Week features are automatically entered for this prize.
We make no secret of the fact that our "feature" is intended for
promotional use of what's good in online newspapers, but when you can
only pick 52 a year, it still means something. The problem with some
other online awards is that they're debased by volume, though the more
practical point for you may be more along the lines of "how many eyeballs
does this drive." On that score, all of the phone company ISPs are
currently trolling for good general interest sites to offer their
customers.
Another brand that remains strong IMO is Cool Site of the Day, which is
maintained by InfiNet. Despite Glen Davis' departure, still worth a
bookmark.
