Larry Mah asked the question what will replace the old paradigm of
usegroups, serarch engines etc. And that it wouldn't go away soon.

The real issue is the changing demographics of the internet. 5 years ago,
if you were in my business, most of the software companies were set up on
CompuServe. If you needed something you went to their forum and asked
questions, downloaded files etc.

The internet was government, academics and researchers (not entirely but
let me gon on this for a while)

Then companies like Microsoft started to move to the internet maybe 3 years
ago, the web came along and people like myself started to have dual
accounts - Internet and CompuServe.

Well now the switch is pretty much completed in the computer industry.

So up until now you had a fairly discreet set of users. Rather focused,
looking for information etc. Most providers were dispensing information,
or doing brouchure ware. Things that complimented their off line
campaigns.

The mix in terms of users is switching rapidly. People with much less
sophistication computer wise are joining the online community. The don't
generally lurke in usegroups, mailing lists etc. Also, the major online
companies - CompuServe, AOL and Prodigy, GENIE are all linking to the
Internet. Many of them just follow the interface. There are companies
trying to reach these new users, many of whom are having a lot of trouble
navigating around the net. Try doing a simple search on one of the search
engines. Often times what you get is page after page of rather useless
information. Users aren't going to want to put up with that. I don't have
the time.

So, we are going to have to find new ways of targeting and informing that
audience.

That's my basic premise.
