I am new to the marketing field, so I'm not particularly savvy
about what works and doesn't work in marketing. However, I have
an idea in regard to decreasing spamming and serving the needs of
the companies that are attempting to target a wide range of
customers.
What if there were a few sites on the Internet where companies
that seek to reach large audiences posted their name and a sentence
about their products or services. If thousands of companies listed
themselves there (perhaps divided into category) and the Internet
public knew about it, those who wanted to receive mailings could go
to the site and check off the names of those companies from whom
they wished to receive mail. The companies would then be provided
with a targeted audience whom they could spam as much as they wanted
to (only now it wouldn't be spam). And assuming that they only did
mass mailings to those people and their own subscribers, people who
don't want to receive spams from them wouldn't be bothered.
Is this a viable idea? Why or why not? (Perhaps the WHY NOT is
that not so many people would ask to be on those lists)
But if yes, how might it be implemented? Who's in charge anyway
of policies regarding spam (I know, nobody is...But what
organizations, apart from Internic, influence policies
regarding advertising and spamming....and the creation of
laws in regard to both?)
