As has been observed by others, I find this list intelligent with a high
signal-to-noise ratio. I am now de-lurking to ask for your valued
opinion.
I have a popular Canadian lottery site that gets over 100,000 page views
per month. Along with other WebMasters, I have gone through the growing
pains of the immature Net advertising business. I joined the
Commonwealth Network back in April, and continue to put up with their
unethical procedures because there are currently very few alternatives.
Trying out NarrowCast Media (NCM) and the Internet Banner/Billboard
Network (IBN) resulted in me being scammed along with other sites; we
did not receive payment for hundreds of thousands of banner ad displays.
I am now being offered a chance to escape from this. A number of
companies have realized my site's potential, and I have been approached
by a well-funded company to purchase my site. I would get the following
revenue: one-time payment for the purchase, a regular flat fee to
continue maintaining the content, and potential involvement in further
development. However, I am hesitant about giving up ownership.
I would prefer giving the purchaser the following: store my content on
their server, control of the new design and content, and they keep any
revenue generated. I would keep official ownership of the lottery
content and would charge for the following:
- licensing the content and name of my site
- guaranteed minimum amount of hours as a consultant to maintain and
further develop the site, at regular hourly contractor rates ($55 per
hour?).
Does this sound reasonable? Or if I can get a guaranteed total revenue
of at least $60,000 for the first year, should I give up "my baby" and
cry all the way to the bank? ;-) After you look at my site, do you
think that I should keep the site and possibly get more money in the
long-term? Microsoft is currently advertising on the main page.
Any advice or insights would be appreciated.
