One of the most interesting things about this thread is that I don't
believe that Lynnly's original post ever appeared on our list. As there
have already been four replies to a post that did not actually happen in
this forum, and the thread is on-topic and interesting, I guess I'll chime
in with a fifth...
On year2000.com we have 75+ advertisers (with 1 year contracts) all with
text-only links on the main page. (Putting 75+ graphic banners on the home
page would be absurd, and it is prime territory.) Some of the advertisers
decide to have their links go directly to their corporate web site, but
many of them decide to have their link go to a bridge page on year2000.com
where the advertiser can post content specifically about their year 2000
crisis related products or services and/or their involvement with our site.
We call it a "mini-homepage." There are narrow limitations on the amount
of text and graphics that are allowed on the mini-homepages so as to not
permit their "ad" to become a full substitute for having a real web site.
One big advantage of this approach is that it allows many of our
advertisers to participate even though they don't have corporate web sites.
They just send us a page of text describing their products/services and
they can advertise with us without creating a full professional site. (Of
course, if they want us to create a full web site for them we will gladly
do so, but the expense of doing so is outside of what some of our
advertisers would consider). Additionally, as we charge a sharply
discounted rate to advertisers that do not put in links that exit
year2000.com, some of our advertisers choose not to put in active links to
their external sites even though they may have them.
The end result is that we have a variety of options that allow a wide range
of advertisers (and advertising budgets) to participate that would not do
so using a standard banner model. We also have graphic banners ads on some
of our second tier pages, but so far the interest in purchasing such
banners has not been very great. That may change given that two weeks ago
year2000.com was shown in a story that ran repeatedly for an entire weekend
on CNN. The page CNN featured had a banner ad on it, giving the advertiser
exposure well beyond anything he had ever anticipated. See:

That advertiser just sent us payment for another year in advance. :-)
