My hunch (and that's all it is) is that there are many THOUSANDS of sites
that offer advertising space. After all, the Commonwealth Network
ALONE has over 3,000 participating sites, and I'm sure any of them would
gladly sell ad space direct. Burst had signed up at least 650 pages as of
about 10 days ago; a lot of other brokers claim to have hundreds of web
sites (though it's likely that many web sites have registered with more
than one broker).
The notion that 100 sites account for 93% of advertising dollars is actually
fairly credible. Back in the early days of the Commonwealth Network, I
did some math and figured that the top 10 web sites accounted for over
50% of the total Commonwealth impressions. (See
http://www.ca-probate.com/cw_may4.htm for CN's May 1996
statistics.)
However, I doubt whether Jupiter is actually tracking the
right 100 sites, and I would definitely not be surprised if we later
learn that their "top 100" doesn't include one or two companies
that are actually in the top 10 right now
Remember, this is a viciously competitive business, and a lot of web
sites and advertisers are being very tight-lipped about their advertising
data, because that data is worth a LOT of money to those who are
just entering the business. That data also allows those "in the know"
to command better pricing.
