Our site never attempted to use banner advertising as a revenue model,
but we were approached early on by some companies wanting to buy
banners to target international business people. We actually
auctioned our first banners sold to the highest bidder. (much more
than I would have expected at the time, given our traffic.) We did
this to actually test market pricing. Now we sell banners based on
the same system, even though we are not out searching for ad revenue.
(Our model is not built on banner revenue) The number of companies
approaching us for "trade" of goods and services, like airline
tickets, is pretty tremendous. Barter for banners seems to be the
word for the day.
