Mike,
I run a small business from my home promoting it entirely on the web at
this point. When I first got on the web last year I indexed my site and
solicited recriprocal links all over the world which I have on a specefic
page devoted to just that on my site. It's been a little over a year now and
my page is still on the first page or no deeper than the second page on
almost all the search engines. My site is a vacation accommodation and gets
very few hits compared to the numbers I hear tossed around on this list but
the % of bookings to hits and inquiries is quite high.About 20%.Of the hits
I get I'd say that one third are generated by the links I have managed to
put in place. These are all unpaid recriprocal links.
All in all the time I spent communicating and creating friendly
relationships was well worth the effort and would be inclined to say that
it is an important part of online advertising.Spreading out your chances of
someone seeing your ad is a valuable thing especially if you can get your
page linked to sites having nothing to do with your site's content
type. It's a cumulative effect and it creates interest .
I believe the placement on the engines is important too but I think
people who search look fairly deep into the resultant listings that come up
when they do a search.Again it comes down to a hook and content. You cannot
expect someone to just buy without looking further. The net is about
information and people want to see all thier options before they choose. You
want your site to stick in thier mind so they'll come back and look more.I
also believe the way things are indexed makes an impression on people. If
your site has a million of the same words in the title to get it placed
well it still looks negative to the browsing public. It's like "this guy is
trying too hard".I believe there is such a thing as too much exposure
too.Placement in good places on prestegious or popular engines or listings
are the best place to be.There's nothing like being on Yahoo on the page
with the right keywords and being on of only a few sites listed there. It
gives off a feeling of importance.
I think these concepts are still missunderstood by the general public.Tis
is about subliminal and subconscious thought.Concepts that are hard to
actually prove. You cannot measure any of that but from what I see on this
list everyone is about numbers and tangable things when in reality good
advertising id intangible and in the subconsious.Click throughs don't
create trust.Simplicity and content presentation as well as rememberability
are the keys.People will find your site but will they remember it?There's
plenty of competition out there on every level and segment of the net.You
want to be remembered and trusted.
