My questions (regarding search engine placement)... Am I wrong in my
estimation of the search engines? If he were to find a bullet-proof
way to remain at the top spot of the listing when someone types a
certain keyword, will it do him any better than finding editorial
and advertising means to promote?

Your client is backing you into a corner about this issue. We
market sites for clients all over the world and we lay out the plan
of action before the markting ever begins. They choose from a
variety of programs. They understand from the beginning that the
search engine listing alone will not be successful, but because that
is the free marketing they opt for putting all the weight on it. (we
too, have found very reliable ways of getting to the top of the
engines, but they are all a bit different in their libraries).

You need to clarify your program for them and offer several options
in different price ranges. Recommend the program that you feel will
get the best results and let them know what it costs to get results.
We have happy clients and it is because they are informed. They
don't mind paying because they are getting great results.

Hope this helps.
