First of all, spam is spam, whether the spammer purchases a list of
addresses or collects his own list. Paid advertising on a mailing list,
however, is different. While few spams provide any information of value or
of relevance to the user, a mailing list such as this one has value to the
subscribers (why else would we be here?), and paid advertising is assumed to
be a method of offsetting the cost of the list's production. Surely, many
subscribers would find ads more palatable than other budgetary solutions
such as paid subscriptions or reduced content.

Having said that, list moderators who accept advertising should have firm
policies in place regarding ads. For instance, a strict limit to each ad's
size (users can be referred to a URL for more info), audience
appropriateness (good business as well as good netiquette), and an alert for
new subscribers in the list's FAQ, home page and elsewhere that the list
does accept paid advertising (the "don't-say-we-didn't-warn-you" effect).
Furthermore, the acceptance of ads in an existing list should be open to
discussion among the members.
