I'd like to share my experience at Michigan State University (MSU) with
the List. I'm teaching internet marketing and advertising and my students
are doing projects on this subject. Thus, we can't get away from online
commercial activities on campus. However, it would conflict with MSU
Ordinance which prohibits advertising on university premises. Our solution
was to register domain names ending with .org. Therefore, I got
www.admedia.org, where I maintain the Internet Advertising Resource
Guide (http://www.admedia.org/internet). It carries an ad banner on a
fee basis. The students now have a venue where they could do real online
stuff. The revenue, albeit not much, goes to our department for teaching and
research purposes. As far as I know, our university still prohibits online
commercial actitives on sites ending .edu.
