I was recently working on an online advertising plan for a client of mine,
and emailed a number of better known sites for information. They all
responded with auto responders sending me to their online media kits. It's
great to have relatively up to date information at your fingertips so
readily. However, I was looking for specific targeting information, and
had said such in my email request. I don't believe a human ever touched my
emails. I then had to attempt calling and emailing each of these
advertising departments. In most cases, I was unable to get through to a
human by phone. When I emailed and voice mailed, it took days for someone
to get back to me. Some have never returned my call or email. I only had
two days to put the plan together. The moral of the story is that all of
the business is going to a smaller, more expensive site that took the time
to call and create the custom solution that I was looking for. I don't
care how busy you are as a buyer of media (online and offline). I have
worked for a large agency buying radio and television in the past, and I
know what it's like to have 50 sales people a day trying to visit you.
However, the best solutions are created when the buyer and seller work as a
team to create a customized marketing solution for a client. If you are
just looking at cost (which is what most "online media kits" provide) you
are selling your client short.
