De-Lurk time. Gray, I'm very vocal in this area, both
online and at conferences where I speak about it.

For me, it has always been very simple:

Anything you do to alter the relevancy and ranking of your
Web site with the search engines should conform fully to the
rules the search engines themselves make. Otherwise, you
not only render the search engine less accurate for
everyone, you also piss off search engine administrators.

Go to each search engine and learn about them. Each of them
have some online help and advice on how they work. Each of
them work differently, and each now look for and penalize
spamdexers, titlestackers, wordpackers, fontmatchers,
redirectors, and other attempts at results skewing.

The funniest part of this is that even if you found the Holy
Grail, anyone could pilfer it by taking your source code
once you put it in place. Yeah, you could write a bunch of
scripts to try and hide it with bait and switch techniques,
but at that point you would officially be on the road to
madness...
