Hey all,

Yesterday I raised the question:

"..does Microsoft seriously think it can compete with UNIX as a web serving
platform without
recording all the data passed between a browser and a server?"

Well, I forgot two things when I wrote this:

1.) Bill Gates is not the richest man in the world because he is stupid.
2.) The first few versions of any Microsoft product are always lame, but
they get better.

Members of the list educated me in the fact that there are solutions to let
you record referral information with IIS 3.0. A few of the responses are
below.

Thanks to everyone who took the time to write me. I appreciate the help.

"e.g. Software, Inc", makers of the respected WebTrends software for web
access reporting, provides a free downloadable IIS plug-in that records
"referrer", "agent (browser)" and other information in IIS logs. This
plug-in provides a number of additional capabilities including separate log
files for each domain.

We have used this plug-in for several months and it has performed well both
in terms of speed and reliability.

Go to www.webtrends.com and then select "Download" and then "Microsoft Plugins".

IIS 4.0, due late this year should also solve this problem (and many others).

I forwarded this question to our NT guru, and here is his reply:

"IIS is more flexible than unix, in that you can drop in an ISAPI
filter, and record anything you want, in any type of format you want,
etc, etc...
There is one from WebTrends that is really good, that's what we use. We
record MORE than Unix does at this point, and we're not locked into it."

The default is to not log. However -- and I confess that I haven't run an
IIS server -- there is a way to set up a "filter" to create the log you
want. An IIS expert should be able to provide the step. Check out the Site
Server software (which includes the former Interse Market Focus); Interse
used to give out a free "filter" for IIS that created the cookie log its
analysis software used.

This is one of the key advantages of the free Apache server is that you can
log along with a hit ANY information passed by server or browser plus some
local information not passed.

Install Hit List Pro on your IIS web server and it will detect that you
have a 'virgin' IIS and ask you if you want to install an extended logging
DLL. Our extended logging DLL -- actually written by Microsoft with a
minor hack from us -- adds user-agent and referrer. After you add it,
you'll also be able to use Hit List (Pro and Enterprise only) to clearly
see which search keywords people used on Yahoo, AltaVista, etc. to find you
(see the built-in Search Keywords Report). If you run Microsoft IIS 4.0,
simply switch to the new W3C Extended logging format and check the
appropriate boxes in IIS to log user-agent and referrer -- no DLL required.

Also -- if a minor plug isn't too abhorrent, if you have a proxy server,
you might want to check out the new Hit List Professional for Intranets --
it's the only game in town that analyzes Microsoft and Netscape proxy logs
in addition to web logs.
