ONLINE-ADS>> generic vs non-generic domain names

My ".to" sense:
===================================
A) I'm interested to know everyone's opinion (well, maybe not
'everyoneís') of the value a domain name plays in marketing
effectiveness and site differentiation. The sites my associates and I
most often visit are a hodgepodge of generic and branded names
(news.com, wired.com, search.com, yahoo.com; downloads.com. tucows.com;
internet.net; tonic.to; forbes.com, etc.). Most generic sites I found by
simply typing the name into my browser. The other generic sites I found
through some sort of promotion and revisit them because the name was
easy to remember, easy to spell and the content was adequate. Nearly
every branded site I visit I found through a link in a newsletter or a
banner ad.

>From this it seems to me that (1) the costs of promoting and generating
traffic for non-generically named sites are greater (perhaps
substantially) than promoting generically-named sites; and, (2)
promotions of generically-named sites are more effective -- partially
because the name remains with the consumer long after the promotion.

B) I'm also interested to know the readers' thoughts on the importance
of the top-level domain (TLD) name (e.g. .com, .net, .to). While .com is
the TLD of choice for most Internet users, most consumers are not yet on
the Internet and have no greater preference for .com than they do for
.mom. With the impending introduction of 7 new TLDs my feeling is that
the market will become more and more cluttered and consumers more and
more confused. One can imagine a consumer asking "was that mall.com,
mall.biz, or mall.mall?" Domain names that are simple, common-language
and contain a TDL that make sense as part of the domain name (such as
connect.to, ticket.to, subscribe.to, apply.to) will have a clear
advantage over similarly named counterparts with different TLDs. (".to"
is the TDL of Tonga, http://tonic.to).

As owner of the aforementioned domain names (and others) I have a vested
interested in this argument, but am sincerely interested in the thoughts
of the group

Many thanks.
