I think the point about doing it by hand is you can remove the people who
would not be interested. Java programming software to a java programming
newsgroup seems reasonable (assuming you think sending unsolicited email is
okay).

But if the newsgroup was more general programming, you only want to add
names of people who mention they program java. A C++ or Visual Basic
programmer does not want to hear about your product.
