Subject: Looking for success stories about mutlilingual Websites
Hi all,
I'm looking for some success stories about companies who have been
particularly successful after adding languages totheir Website. Do you
know of a good story of increased traffic (or sales) on a company's Website
pages that are *not* in English? If so, please send it to me. I make
presentations about multilingual Websites (no, we are not translators), and
write articles. This could be some good PR for the company you tell me about!
Best regards,

Subject: Contributing to a new book
Hello, all -
Ever been involved in a disaster, or near disaster in your online
career? Have you ever been burnt, ending up papering your guest bathroom
with worthless founders' shares? Having seen my share of
well-intentioned disasters on the web, I'm starting to put together a
book of case studies on what NOT to do online. I am looking for
objective, true stories, not slam-dunks by disgruntled ex-employees (or
current employees for that matter!)
The focus of the book is roughly divided into these areas:
a. GREAT IDEAS THAT FLOPPED for various reasons; ahead of their time,
behind their time, not enough money, too much money, bad management with
good technology, good management with bad technology, near-sighted,
far-sighted, whatever!.
b. SCAMS; yes, these need to be looked at, not for what they are, but
for what they tried to get away with.
c. PROPRIETARY TECHNOLOGIES that lost... and proprietary technologies
that won, and then blew it.
d. PLAIN BAD LUCK... those companies who just couldn't hang on until
that IPO, or a big 3-letter competitor just wiped 'em out with marketing
clout, etc.
Every contributor can decide to be absolutely anonymous, so that nothing
will be traceable or attributable to you, OR you can get full credit for
your contribution, whichever way you prefer. i'll do all the scientific
investigative work - you just point out the black holes! A percentage of
any profits (however unlikely) from publication will be donated to the
International Webcasting Association of Europe (of which I am a member)
to fund their ongoing efforts, so help me out here - it's for two good
causes - the community and the community!
What I promise you is this: it will be a VERY interesting read. Of
course there is a unique twist to the approach, so not every worthy
story will end up being used... but there's alway Son of Sad Stories
II....
Cheers from London,
Mike Crosson <mcrosson_at_btinternet.com>

This request probably would be best for the "Help" version:
We are a small, simple local site that is starting to get unsolicited
requests for advertising (we have great demographics!). But they also
want to know about our click-through rates. We don't have any
sophisticated equipment or software, so right now we're doing it
manually and quite unscientifically. For the Web sites we do, it's easy
to measure. But for links off our server, we have no way of knowing. Can
anyone recommend the best and easiest way for a small site, like ours,
to give advertisers a better read on click-throughs. PS: We are finding
that our home page ad buttons are being clicked in the 12% to 14% range.
Thanks!

Subject: Targeting specific customers for Flowers
Hi,
I have been following the discussions on this list for a couple of months
now, but this is my first time to post. I hope this is an appropriate place
to ask this question.
I have recently set up an online Florist shop. We are an FTD florist
offering nationwide deliveries. I have a great domain name for the site, but
start-up traffic has been slow. I have been going about getting listed on
all the search engines and free directories, but I am ready to move my
marketing efforts beyond that.
Here are my questions:
1. Does anyone have suggestions regarding the directories on the web that
either require payment to be listed, or to get better placement? Do you
believe these directories are valuable in reaching people who are looking to
buy send flowers? Which are the best, and which do I avoid?
2. I have a small budget to buy banner ads. How should I go about using this
budget to best reach people who are most likely to be looking to send
flowers? Should I try to buy banners to run on specific sites or should I
buy from an organization that place ads on multiple pages? How do I best
target buyers for this product?

I am the webmaster of a Continuing Medical Education website and we are
looking for any site out there that contains very specialized e-mail
OPT-IN lists for the medical profession. Is anyone aware of any that
might have such a thing? I tried PostMaster Direct and they only have
vague medical lists. We are looking for all of the different
specialties in the medical field so that we can make them aware of the
vast amounts of audio, video and CD-Rom education products including
board reviews, annual conventions, etc. We also have categories like
Overeaters Anonymous, Child Abuse, Computer/Internet, Automotive, etc.
Although we are most interested in looking for the medical specialties
to send targetted e-mail to.
I would appreciate any insight from this group. We are really looking
to boost our traffic to our site. Thank you all for the interesting
discussions that I have seen on this list.

I recently debuted the "beta" of a web site I've been working on for the
past couple of weeks. I intend to enter it in the GeoCities/AdWeek
"Madison Avenue" contest. My hope is that online marketers and
advertisers in the New York area will use it as a reference.
OLAF - the On Line Advertising Forum - is a collection of links that are
relevant to online advertising. I've categorized the links and made the
interface as simple as I can make it.
I would appreciate any constructive feedback that the members of this
list can give me. I want to make this site an easy-to-use free
reference guide for all in the NY area.

Subject: Mail List Advertising
Mail lists represent an advertising opportunity that has not yet taken hold.
I publish a daily list with over 14,000 subscribers called Inspire. Inspire
sends a crisp, thought provoking, generally positive message via email once
each day. At present, it is free, and 95% of the messages go out without ads.
Does anyone on the online-ads list have a suggestion as to how I might turn
this into a break-even or even profitable venture? I've not yet found ad
brokers who handle ads in mail lists, and I suspect that only 2% to 5% of the
subscribers would pay an fee.
I'd appreciate any/all feedback and creative suggestions.
