You've made a very interesting, and totally incorrect, interpretation
of my post regarding unsolicited email messages. I have been
using email to help businesses market their products and services
since 1991, before the 'Net became commercial. I believe that email
is the most effective form of PR and advertising that the 'Net offers
companies, when done correctly. And your illustration is an example of
doing it right. When someone posts a message asking for a product, or
information about a product, then I can respond. I make a portion of my
living by monitoring discussion groups for companies and responding
when appropriate, and by training businesses in the appropriate use of
email PR and marketing. Please check out my guide "How to Conduct
Research on the Internet" <http://www.tbchad.com/resrch.html>
for some examples of how I have used the Internet for marketing.
But I take exception to your assertion that most unsolicited email
comes from newsgroup postings and is relevant to those postings.
I very rarely post to the many discussion groups that I subscribe to.
I did post an item to sell to a forsale group this week, and one of the
responses I received was an ad to sell me something, not to buy the
item I posted: that's unsolicited email and spam! If I directly ask a
question, or for information, it's okay to send me email relevant to that
issue, but it's not ok to send me an ad just because I belong to a
discussion group, or am listed in the Internic directory. BTW, I also
receive a lot of solicited email advertising. I'm signed up on Postmaster
Direct and check the "yes you can send me info" boxes on websites for
products in which I have interest. That's good email marketing.
