Because project requirements, production quality and technical
proficiency vary tremendously, I'd be truly surprised (and highly
skeptical) if such a report (outlining average turn around times) exists.
I'm probably going overboard here, but, what is your organization's
definition of a web site? If profit is the primary motivation for serving
clients, 15 minutes is all it should take to create a "web site". On the
other hand, if your organization is driven by a desire to create a highly
functional web site -- that is, to do the "right thing" for the client --
it may take months to create a web site which occupies the same number of
bytes. This, IMO, is precisely the reason why the quality of work (and
the amount of time it takes for creation) vary tremendously -- to the
extent that both extremes are tolerated by the market.
Other things to consider include the team's experience, the work
environment, the client's deadline, the budget, client objectives, your
team's current workload, the equipment (slow computers? fast computers?),
attitudes, content (original? repurposed?), copyright approvals, size of
the site, research, user-testing and God (or, wherever it is that good
ideas come from). :-)
Finally, the web sites I've created have taken anywhere from 1 month to 1
year to produce. As Jessica suggests, much of the time is spent gathering
information, client approvals, meetings, etc. In some cases, I've even
witnessed power struggles within the client's organization. Yup -- that's
the one that took a year to do. Typically, once I have most of the
information I need, it takes about 2-3 weeks to create the interface for
the main page and a secondary page -- the pages that take the most time
to create. From that point on, the sky's the limit.
Hmmm. One week sounds more like fast food to me. :-|
