I have to take issue, Richard, with your suggestion in Online-Ads "Ad
Bytes" that a good reason to link unto others is that it gives you
leverage in asking others to link unto you. It does, of course, but
that's not providing value to your readers.

I personally shy away from sites that engage in this practice because I
feel that the editors/webmasters/moderators are more interested in
generating publicity for their own sites than in exercising sound
editorial judgment for their readers. If I think a site is one that my
readers should know about, I will link to it regardless of its policy
towards my site.

On my Advertising Online (http://adsonline.miningco.com) site, for
example, I have strong opinions about the value of many other sites, or
areas within sites, to online advertisers and marketers. I create links
in the Net Finds, Best of, and Resources areas. I happen to give the
"Online Advertising Discussion List" my highest rating. Whether or not
you ever scratch my back by returning the link or the praise (and as far
as I know, you don't) will never affect my link to, or judgment about,
about your site.

I routinely turn down requests for reciprocal links. I'm not bashful
about letting other sites know about my site, but my opinion of what they
do is not influenced by whether or not they link to me. I respect the
many sites out there that have a similar policy, and am very wary of
those that don't. --Thom Forbes
